En el \u00e1nodo, la mol\u00e9cula de hidr\u00f3geno, al entrar en contacto con un catalizador, se descompone y libera electrones que crean la corriente el\u00e9ctrica. Esto es la <strong>oxidaci\u00f3n<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2 H2 \u2192 4 H+ + 4 e-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Por otro lado, en el c\u00e1todo, el ox\u00edgeno, en contacto con los electrones liberados por la reacci\u00f3n anterior, reacciona. Esta es la <strong>reducci\u00f3n<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>O2 + 4 e- \u2192 2 O-2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finalmente, los protones de hidr\u00f3geno, al llegar al <strong>c\u00e1todo<\/strong>, se siglo XIX y ten\u00eda una potencia de 1,5 kW. El inter\u00e9s por la pila de combustible se reaviv\u00f3 en los a\u00f1os 30 con los trabajos de Francis T. Bacon. Sustituy\u00f3 el electrolito \u00e1cido por uno alcalino.<\/p>\n<p>La mejora resultante de la eficiencia y la vida \u00fatil de la pila de combustible permiti\u00f3 su uso en misiones espaciales. Sin embargo, como la tecnolog\u00eda es demasiado cara, queda confinada a nichos de mercado y ha sido abandonada por la industria.<\/p>\n<p>La aparici\u00f3n de cuestiones ecol\u00f3gicas y el entusiasmo del sector del autom\u00f3vil a principios de los a\u00f1os 90 reavivaron la investigaci\u00f3n sobre esta tecnolog\u00eda.<\/p>\n<p>A partir de entonces, se probaron varios tipos de electrolitos y se utilizaron en diferentes prototipos. La tecnolog\u00eda PAFC es una de las m\u00e1s avanzadas en t\u00e9rminos de desarrollo y comercializaci\u00f3n. Funciona entre 180\u00b0C y 210\u00b0C y puede alimentar instalaciones fijas de varios megavatios. Esto evita la necesidad de utilizar catalizadores de metales raros.
