It has been demonstrated in the XVIIIth century by the scientists Christian Friedrich Sch\u00f6nbein and William Grove \u2013 who is generally credited with inventing the fuel cell in 1839. The term \u201cfuel cell\u201d was firstly used in 1889.<\/p>\n<p>Grove conducted a series of experiments and proved that electric current could be produced from an electrochemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen over a platinum catalyst.<\/p>\n<p>The fuel cell concept is simple\u00a0:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hydrogen + Oxygen \u2192\u00a0Electricity + Water\u00a0+ Heat<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2 H<sub>2 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/sub>+ \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0O<sub>2 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/sub>\u2192 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a02 H<sub>2<\/sub>O<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><p>Inside the fuel cell, a redox reaction takes place to produce electricity and heat. For a PEM Fuel Cell, Hydrogen is processed at the anode where electrons are separated from protons on the contact of a catalyst. It is the oxidation step.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2 H<sub>2\u00a0<\/sub> \u2192<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 4 H<sup>+<\/sup> + 4 e<sup>\u2013<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Hydrogen protons migrate through a membrane, then cross the electrolyte to reach the cathode side. As electronic insulator, the membrane stops electrons and they have to reach the cathode side through an external circuit.<\/p>\n<p>On the cathode side, Oxygen is carried out (extracted directly from the air) and is combined with electrons on the surface of a catalyst. This is the reduction step.<\/p>\n<p><strong>O<sub>2<\/sub> + 4 e<sup>\u2013\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0\u2192 \u00a02 O<sup>-2<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finally, the Hydrogen protons are combined with Oxygen anions to produce water.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4 H<sup>+<\/sup> + 2 O<sup>-2<\/sup>\u00a0\u00a0\u2192\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u00a02 H<sub>2<\/sub>O<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even if the concept seems to be simple, in reality it is more complex to develop a highly-efficient and durable fuel cell.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-1 obscure until Francis T. Bacon \u2013 an engineering professor at Cambridge University \u2013 developed an Alkaline Fuel Cell (AFC) in the late 1930s and demonstrated the first fuel cell system with a nominal power of 5 kW in 1959.<\/p>\n<p>Research activities led by NASA with industrial partners improved fuel cell lifespan and fuel cell generators were used for space missions.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, the technology still remained too expensive. The keen interest for fuel cell systems and for hydrogen technologies reemerged with concerns about climate change and energy security. This type of fuel cell uses mainly an electrolyte composed of potassium hydroxide. It has an electrolyte made of phosphoric acid, its electrodes are mainly composed of carbon materials and it operates at temperature between 180\u00b0C and 210\u00b0C.\u00a0They are mainly used for CHP applications. Indeed their electricity production rate is relatively low but when the heat is harnessed the efficiency can reach 80%.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike other fuel cell technologies, a PAFC is very resistant to pollution by carbon monoxide and the fuel cell is able to operate with lower hydrogen and oxygen quality. They are commonly used to deliver tens of Megawatts to power large stationary systems.<\/p>\n<p>Their efficiency ranges from 60% to 80% and the main advantage of this technology is the possibility to operate, without a reformer, on a variety of different fuels such as methane, natural gas and even coal derived fuel gas.
