Sterne und Gasplaneten beispielsweise bestehen gr\u00f6\u00dftenteils aus Wasserstoff.<br \/>\nIm reinen Zustand kommt Wasserstoff eher selten vor, erst recht auf der Erde. Man findet Wasserstoff vor allem in Verbindung mit anderen Atomen, z. B. mit Sauerstoff im Wasser (H2O) oder mit Kohlenstoff in Kohlenwasserstoffen (CH4, C2H6, \u2026).<br \/>\nWenn sich zwei Wasserstoffatome verbinden, ist das entstehende Wasserstoffmolek\u00fcl gasf\u00f6rmig. Man spricht man von Wasserstoffgas. B. Wassermolek\u00fclen herausgel\u00f6st werden kann. Das kann beispielsweise durch Elektrolyse \u2013 mit Strom aus erneuerbaren Energiequellen \u2013 oder mithilfe anderer Energiequellen wie Erdgas oder Erd\u00f6l durch Reformierung geschehen.<br \/>\nDie Wasserstoffherstellung durch Wasserelektrolyse hat aus \u00f6kologischer Hinsicht mehrere Vorteile, weil sie ohne CO2-Aussto\u00df und lokal erfolgen kann.<br \/>\nWasserstoff ist keine Energie, sondern ein Energietr\u00e4ger. Das hei\u00dft Wasserstoff enth\u00e4lt Energie, die sofort oder sp\u00e4ter genutzt werden kann. Das Verfahren ist eine m\u00f6gliche L\u00f6sung f\u00fcr die Speicherung \u00fcbersch\u00fcssiger Energie. Am gebr\u00e4uchlichsten ist die Dampfreformierung, bei der Methan mit Wasserdampf gespalten wird.<br \/>\nDas Methan (CH4) wird zun\u00e4chst einer Entschwefelung unterzogen, bei der eventuell enthaltene Schwefelmolek\u00fcle beseitigt werden. Dann wird dem Methan Wasserdampf (H2O) zugef\u00fchrt. Auf diese Weise erh\u00e4lt man molekularen Wasserstoff (H2) und Kohlenmonoxid (CO), das darauf hin erneut mit dem Wasserdampf reagiert, um Kohlendioxid (CO2) zu bilden.
